Prayer Group:
A small group of Christians meet to pray together at 8am on the second Saturday of the month at Capricorner, in Church Street.
It is an informal group, usually about eight or nine people attending regularly, mainly led by Patrick Tooms but sometimes others.
Patrick says: “What happens is that we start with an idea, or subject, such as “loneliness”, and talk around it, and then, as moved, we will pray, very informally, probably with pauses while people digest what has been heard. We may wish to develop it or wait for inspiration.”
Individuals also offer prayers about a particular item such as illness, bereavement, a birth, or an international event.
The group started about 15 years ago with a more structured approach of prepared readings and written prayers but has evolved into this more relaxed pattern, relying on inspiration, which people find much less intimidating.
“I think we find that the atmosphere of quiet, contemplation, inspiration, meditation and fellowship, combined with an exchange of perspectives very helpful,” says Patrick.
“We also have a real sense of someone listening. There is no feeling of having to ‘pray properly’,” he adds.
