Bishop blesses new room & organ

Bishop blesses Quainton’s new room and refurbished organ:

Holy Cross and St Mary’s Church at Quainton has shown itself  a lively, forward thinking community by bravely taking on the challenge of building a new room and refurbishing the pipe organ.

Bishop Alan with Quainton Vicar the Rev Phillip Mears

This was the verdict of Bishop Alan Watson when he blessed both projects at Evensong on Sept 16th. The new room above the vestry provides an exciting new space for use by the young people’s Sunday Club, the PCC and other groups. Bishop Alan praised the immense amount of work and commitment shown by a great many people  to bring it all about.  He said church buildings were not museums, and they should be used to help place the living church at the heart of the local community. He described Quainton as a “high energy parish”.

The cost of the two projects has been met by a localfamily trust, the Anstiss Bequest.

Special guests at the service included Miss Ashley Newman representing Architects Design Partnership, Oxford, Peter Collins, organ builder  and his wife, from Leicester, and Mr Arthur Evans, chairman of Quainton Parish Council.

Mr David Shefford, of Richard Ward (Oxford) Ltd builders, and local resident Robert Martell, chartered surveyor, were especially thanked for their professional input.

The service was conducted by the Vicar of Quainton, the Rev Phillip Mears. Clergy from the Schorne team, the Rev David Meakin the Rev Liz Welters and the Rev Paul Mansell attended along with  a former Quainton Vicar, the Rev David Hemsley and his wife Grace. The organ was put through its paces by Mr Barry Williams, Oxford Diocesan Organ Adviser, who played for Evensong, closing with Bach’s Toccata and Fugue. Afterwards the congregation were invited to inspect the new room, and a finger buffet with wine was served
